IPBC 2012 – IP at the tipping point

The Overview

The value-creating potential in intellectual property has never been more high-profile than it is now. Auctions, patent-driven M&As and a growing number of other transactions have put IP on the front pages of business publications across the world. In 2012, the IP Business Congress will focus on the events of the last year and will discuss their implications, as well as what happens next.

Already established as the world’s pre-eminent event about IP as a corporate asset, the IPBC has never been more relevant to those who are responsible for creating value from IP, as well as those who offer them third-party services. Nowhere else during 2012 will you hear so many top-level executives, investors and policy makers talking about cutting-edge IP value creation issues, nor will you have a better opportunity to swap experiences with them in face-to- face conversations at the many networking events that take place alongside the formal programme.

At long last it looks like IP may have reached the tipping point – it has become a boardroom issue. Make sure you are in Portugal from 24th to 26th June to learn about where we go from here.

The Event

The fifth IP Business Congress (IPBC) will once again be hosted by Intellectual Asset Management (IAM) magazine at Portugal’s leading conference venue, the Hotel Cascais Miragem, near Lisbon, from 24th to 26th June 2012.

In just four years, the IPBC has established itself as the forum for senior thought leaders who specialise in the business of intellectual property to come together to discuss cutting-edge issues around IP value creation. In these uncertain times, such an agenda is more relevant than ever. Portugal has experienced the fastest growth in innovation performance among EU member states over recent years, and is also Europe’s gateway to Brazil - one of the world’s fastest-growing economies. This makes it the perfect venue for the IPBC 2012.

Previous IPBCs in Amsterdam (2008), Chicago (2009), Munich (2010) and San Francisco (2011) have clearly demonstrated that an event which brings together high-level attendees and speakers from the corporate, political, advisory and financial sectors to discuss the cutting-edge issues in IP and intellectual capital value creation will attract high-level delegates from around the world.

At a time when an ever- growing number of organisations understand that their intellectual capital is a crucial strategic asset, the IPBC has firmly established itself as the world’s pre-eminent business-related IP event. This was never more apparent than when the attendees at the IPBC in San Francisco in June 2011 were invited to remotely ring the closing bell on the New York Stock Exchange from the networking centre of the conference.

The Host

IAM magazine is universally acknowledged as the world’s leading IP business magazine. The magazine was launched in July 2003 to address the need for organisations to maximise the value of their IP and other intangibles, and to examine the strategies they can put in place to do this. IAM is unique because it treats IP as a business asset and tool rather than simply as a legal right. With this unequalled appeal to the boardroom, IAM has quickly established itself as the only IP publication that many senior corporate executives read regularly.

Using our world-class corporate, financial, intermediary and legal contacts, a faculty of speakers is once again being assembled for the IPBC 2012. It will be made up of individuals in charge of IP at some of the world’s most forward-thinking companies, both large and small; global IP thought leaders; and senior policy makers from North America, Europe and Asia. Their unique insights and experiences, presented in both our plenary and breakout sessions, will provide delegates with a thorough understanding of the principles that lie behind the development of IP value creation strategies, as well as the many challenges – actual and future – that IP-owning companies face.

The IP Hall of Fame

The IP Hall of Fame honours those who have made an outstanding contribution to the development of intellectual property law and practice. Devised and developed by IAM magazine, it identifies individuals who have helped to establish intellectual property as one of the key business assets of the 21st century. The aim is not only to acknowledge the vital role played by these innovators in fostering today’s vibrant IP environment and ensuring its continued health, but also to show how central IP is to the global economy and to the wellbeing of people around the world.

The IP Hall of Fame welcomes new inductees on an annual basis. Via the nomination process, anyone in the global IP community can put forward a name to be considered by the IP Hall of Fame Academy, comprising all living IP Hall of Fame inductees and specially invited international IP thought leaders. A full list of Academy members can be found at http://www.iphalloffame.com/Academy.aspx.

On 25th June 2012, at a gala dinner to be held in Estoril, the latest individuals chosen for induction by the IP Hall of Fame Academy will be honoured by past inductees, members of the Academy, IPBC delegates and invited guests.

If you want to join the world’s leading IP business thought leaders for three days of high-level debate that focuses on corporate IP value creation, then you cannot afford to miss the IPBC 2012.

We look forward to seeing you in Portugal next June.
